Quick answer: on PS5 and Xbox, cheat codes in Grand Theft Auto are entered by pressing a sequence of controller buttons during normal gameplay. This is how it worked in GTA V, and we expect GTA 6 to work the same way. We will confirm this on launch day, 19 November 2026.
Step by step (PS5 and Xbox)
- Load your story mode game. Make sure you are in control of your character, not in a menu, a cutscene or the pause screen.
- Open our cheat list and choose your console.
- Press the buttons in the exact order shown. Arrows (↑ ↓ ← →) mean the D-pad, not the analog stick.
- Enter the sequence at a steady pace. Long pauses can reset the input.
- Look for an on-screen message confirming the cheat. In GTA V it said “Cheat activated”.
Other ways cheats worked in GTA V
GTA V also let players enter cheats by dialling numbers on the in-game phone, and PC players could type cheat words into a cheat box. We do not yet know if GTA 6 keeps these methods. Any phone numbers or typed cheats for GTA 6 will be added only after they are tested.
Code not working? Check these
- Wrong console: PS5 and Xbox codes use different buttons. Use our conversion chart if in doubt.
- D-pad vs stick: directions must be pressed on the D-pad.
- During a mission: in GTA V some missions blocked cheats.
- In GTA Online: cheat codes did not work online in GTA V.
- The code changed: the code may simply be different in GTA 6. Check the status label on the card.
Before you use cheats
Make a manual save first. In GTA V, using cheats switched off trophies and achievements for that session, and some effects (like explosive bullets or a higher wanted level) can make missions harder rather than easier. Read do cheats disable trophies? for details.
